Abstract
This report reviews the status, role and impact of Community Support Officers (CSOs) in Western Australia. The term CSO represents a range of community-based natural resource management (NRM) support including Community Landcare Coordinators (CLCs), Bushcare and Rivercare officers. As part of this review, the future status and support structures required to sustain CSOs in communities are discussed. The results of this report confirm that CSOs are considered to be integral to the success of NRM initiatives in rural and urban and metropolitan regions of the State. This is because they have the capacity to adapt broad NRM recommendations to address local conditions and need; local community groups can influence the issues CSOs are to address; State agency NRM programs are supported by the commitment and resources provided by CSOs within specific regions; and CSOs are working to enhance social capital and the NRM decision-making capacity of communities.
