Abstract

Since the development of land for agriculture in Western Australia more than 1 600 square kilometres of land has become too saline for normal crops and pasture, and the area is increasing. Much of this land was previously the most fertile crop land and on some farms salinity constitutes a major problem.

The purpose of this booklet is to impart an understanding of the nature and cause of saltland in Western Australia. The methods of treatment are explained in the light of this understanding. The material in the booklet is based on a detailed review 'Soil salinity in South Western Australia" which will be published in the Department of Agriculture Technical Bulletin series. Sources of information are acknowledged in the Technical Bulletin.
