Abstract
IThe grasses comprise one of the world's largest families of flowering plants, with over 500 groups or genera containing well over 5000 individual types or species distributed throughout the world. About 125 groups have been recorded in Western Australia but it is probable that the list is far from complete. About one third of these have ° been introduced from overseas.
The purpose of this bulletin is to describe those grasses which are more commonly found in the south-west of Western Australia. Also, as many people are interested in knowing the name and nature of a grass when they find it, often before the plant has matured, the text includes a guide to the identification of the grasses. The guide is based on general growth characteristics of the grasses and is supplemented by a simple description of seed-head and general characteristics sufficient to confirm the identification. Where a plant has been traced to a group name, but none of the descriptions given under this name fits the specimen, the reader should consult more detailed texts for descriptions of less common types.
The use of botanical terms has been avoided wherever possible and emphasis placed on features which can be observed with the naked eye or with a hand lens. This has caused some over-simplification which is of no importance for the general reader.
