Abstract

For some time feral goats have been recognised as a threat to the ecological status of the West Australian rangelands. Therefore they are a declared animal under the Agricultural Protection Board legislation. However, despite persistent efforts to protect the rangelands from excessive grazing pressure by culling and commercial harvesting, feral goats have thrived. Their ability to persist in large numbers despite the efforts to remove them stimulated an interest in commercial goat raising as an alternative enterprise for rangelands particularly for those areas where it was difficult to maintain adequate levels of production from sheep.
