Abstract
Two virus diseases pose a serious threat to lupins. These are caused by cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), which induces diseases in narrow-leafed and yellow lupins, and bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV), which infects all types of cultivated lupins. The effects of the viruses on lupin plants range from subtle colour changes and leaf distortion to leaf shedding, stunting and death. Seed production is decreased or prevented. There is no cure, but lupin crops can be managed to minimise both virus spread and its persistence from year to year.
CMV and BYMV occur within all tissues in the plant, but do not survive in dead plant material or in the soil. The particles of CMV are spherical and those of BYMV are flexuous filaments, and both are so small that they can only be seen with an electron microscope.
Both viruses are transmitted 'non-persistently' by aphids. When an aphid picks up the virus after feeding upon an infected plant, it will only retain it for one or two probes on a healthy plant before ceasing to transmit it.
Depending on the lupin species involved, both viruses can also be 'seed trans- mitted'. Seeds become infected in the developing pod and the plants that grow from these seeds are virus-infected. Plants infected by aphids are called 'current- season infected', to distinguish them from 'seed-infected' plants.
