Abstract

The yeast extract NuPro® is derived from processing the cell contents of the Saccharmyces cerevisiae yeast. It is a source of high quality amino acids, glutamic acid and nucleotides (Halbrook et al., 2004). The need for nucleotides is elevated during periods of rapid growth and stress and also in immuno-compromised animals. These factors are often present in piglets during the pre- and post-weaning period. While including NuPro® in weaner diets can improve the growth rate of piglets and reduce the incidence of diarrhoea post-weaning, no research has determined whether including NuPro® in the diet of lactating sows will have any benefit to the litter post-weaning. It was hypothesized that the post-weaning performance of pigs will be improved when the lactating sow diet contains 2% NuPro®.
