Abstract
The design of a management strategy for sows includes setting reproductive targets and then calculating nutrient allowances to meet these specified targets (Williams and Mullan, 1989). Environmental factors that influence either voluntary food intake (VP!) or the partition of ingested nutrients will determine whether these allowances, and hence reproductive targets, are achieved. The following paper considers the impact that some of the major climatic factors have on the performance of sows during gestation and lactation.
