Abstract

The aims of the trials at Binnu, Chapman, Wongan Hills, Avondale and Merredin were:

  1. To determine whether the application of nitgrogen and fertilisers can maintain yields under a "continuous cropping" system
  2. To compare the merits of three sources of nitrogen for this purpose.
  3. To determine the maintenance dressing of superphosphate under this system and the need for supplementary fertilisers.

Trial 61A2
There have been no great problems with this trial. for a number of years the plots have required chemical spraying to control wild oats which had built up. In 1968 and 1969 some plots were soil sampled to determine the effects of various fertiliser treatments on soil properties.

Trial 61WH2

Wimmera rye grass has been present in these plots for a number of years but has not become very serious to date. there is some wireweed in the plots. In 1968 and 1969 some plots were soil sampled to determine the effects of various fertiliser treatments on soil properties.

Trial 61M2

The plots had become very weedy with Wimmera ryegrass, brome goass and annual Phalaris. Also the structure of the soil was very poor. For these reasons the trial will be planted back to Barrel Medic in 1970.

Trial 61M11

The plots have had wimmera rye grass in them for a number of years. The incidence of this weed has been higher than other sources. In 1968 and 1969 some plots were soil sampled to determine the effects of various fertiliser treatments on soil properties.

Trial 61GE6

This trial was abandoned in 1969 due to excessive weed build up, which also wiped out the 1968 crop.

Trial 63C1

This trial has now been abandoned due to the build up of cereal eelworm. This makes the 1969 yields unreliable because some plots were badly affected by eelworm.

Trial 60GE3

This trial was a different design to those shown earlier. the level of wimmera rye grass in the plots became quite high. Also the plts were sprayed several years to control wild turnip. The trial was terminated in 1968.

Trial 62NO2

This trial was terminated.

Trial 62WH1

There was serious buiild up in wimmera rye grass in these plots and this was much more marked by the plots wehre the stubble was not burnt. Most of the difference in yields due to stubble treatment was due to this difference in wimmera rye grass population.
