Abstract
Located on the Gulf coast, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) consists of the seven states: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Qiwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. The UAE was declared a federation on the 2nd December I 971 and is ruled by the Supreme Council of Rulers, which is composed of the seven Emirate rulers.
The UAE has a population of approximately 2.3 million. Its people enjoy one of the world's highest incomes per capita (estimated at US$17,900 in 1996) and the economy benefits from a relatively large annual trade surplus. The UAE's wealth is based on oil and gas output, contributing about 33 per cent to GDP.
In 1996, the two way trade between the UAE and Australia amounted to over A$1billion making it one of Australia's top three markets in the Middle East. The country is known for its liberal trade policies, having the biggest free trade zone in the Middle East - Jabel Ali. The Jabel Ali area in Dubai is considered one of the most significant industrial and commercial areas in the whole country.
