The first stage of the Irrigation Scheme which included the Diversion dam was completed by 1963 and by 1966, 31 irrigated farms had been established.

Cotton was the major crop until 1974. In the wet season of that year 3642 hectares was devoted to cotton. Various crops such as rice, sorghum, sunflower, maize, soybeans, and horticultural crops, have featured prominently on the Ord River Irrigation area since 1974.
Other crops such as the beef industries crops, hay etc were prompted by the live shipment of cattle from Wyndham which commenced in 1978. Cropping for the beef industry has enjoyed a gradual increase since that time.
