Cover picture: Ladybirds in general are useful insects - but not so the species illustrated on this month’s cover. Epilachna 28-punctata, aptly named the leaf-eating ladybird, is a pest of cucurbits, but also attacks such vegetables as tomatoes, potatoes and beans. This species was originally confined to the north of the state but is now also found in more southern areas..
