Cover picture: This issue’s cover is a classic illustration of the value of protein in pig feeding. The picture shows chops cut at the last rib of bacon weight carcasses from a Medina Pig Research Station trial. Each row of chops represents one feeding treatment, with treatments numbered 1 (bottom row) to 4 (top row). The excessive fat and small eye muscle of chops from treatments 1 and 2 are the result of limited protein in an all-barley diet. Pigs in treatment 3 were fed half the recommended level of meat meal and produced much less fat, but still had a smaller eye muscle than treatment 4 pigs, which were fed the recommended protein level.
