Cover picture: Weather system approaching the coast of Western Australia, adapted from Commonwealth Bureau of Meteorology satellite photographs by staff artist Bob Steed. Daily weather satellite photographs have become an important aid to the Bureau’s forecasting work. Forecasting the frequency of drought from long term records is being attempted in a project at the University Institute of Agriculture. Aspects of this study are presented in an article starting on page 144 of this issue.
