Abstract

Key components of the project: The avocado industry in Western Australia has been steadily growing over the past 15 years. During this time there has been no comprehensive survey of the industry to determine its size and production base. This survey aimed to collect information from as many commercial avocado growers as possible about tree numbers, age, yield, markets, growing methods and general industry knowledge.

Industry significance: This survey will provide comprehensive data on the avocado industry that will enable producers, packers, marketeers, investors, etc to have greater confidence in their various decision makings.

Key outcomes: Significant increases in annual plantings have occurred since 1999 and are expected to continue to at least 2002. « By year 2002, it is expected that there will be 525 ha of avocados planted in Western Australia. Of the area planted 55% will be in the Pemberton region, 23% in the Bunbury region and 22% in the Perth region. The variety Hass will account for almost 96% of the area planted. + In 1999/00, the avocado yield from Western Australia was | ,731,996 kg, 52% of this from the Perth region, 43% from the Pemberton region and 5% from the Bunbury region. ¢ Approximately 65% of the avocados produced in 99/00 were sold on Perth markets.

Clear conclusions: The avocado industry can expect a significant increase in production of avocados out of Western Australia, with the majority of this increase coming out of the lower south-west regions, 1.e. mid to late season Hass fruit.

Recommendations forfuture R&D: Information needs to be gathered on markets and production of other suppliers of avocados during Western Australia's production time and this needs to be factored into the results from this survey. If this is not done and strategies developed to deal with issues, then there could be rough waters ahead.

Recommendations for practical application to industry: It is expected that industry will use the knowledge of tree numbers and potential future production increases to help target promotion and research activities that either improve current markets or develop new markets. The availability and dissemination of important information on growing, industry development and markets needs to be improved.
