Abstract
It is difficult to think logically and make rational choices when under extreme pressure.
The seasonal break between harvest and preparation for seeding is a good time to get some rest and take some time to consider the position of your enterprise.
This is your best opportunity to assess risks and make important decisions when the demands on your time are few.
Most people, farm managers included, struggle to make sound decisions if they are extremely stressed-this is only natural. If you feel that you are struggling to make decisions, counselling services are a valuable resource to help you plan the next 12 months.
As the manager, you are the most important asset your farm business has and you need to be healthy to allow your business and your family to remain healthy.
External support, including accountants, farm consultants, counsellors and financial advisers, is never more important than during times of pressure.
People with a reputation for sound decision making and planning are invariably those who complement their own experience with information and wisdom from their personal and professional networks. Participating in community functions and attending professional development courses will enable you to access valuable knowledge and support that will help with your farm planning.
Be open to the options
If you need a break from farming, share farming or leasing the farm could be an option. Alternatively, agisting stock could enable you to take an extended break.
