Abstract
At its meeting of 7 April 1993 the Southern Demersal Gillnet and Demersal Longline Fishery Management Advisory Committee (hereafter called "the Committee) was advised of the Western Australian Fisheries Department's Research Division's concern over the status of shark stocks. All the data available indicate that whiskery sharks are severely over-exploited with stock levels declining by around 10% to 30% of original levels. Current levels of fishing effort are expected to cause the stock to decline further. Gummy sharks have high risk of over exploitation (stock has declined to 40% -50% of original levels. Dusty whaler stocks (bronze whaler) is uncertain because of the long time taken for the effects of fishing to be observed. Absence of older juvenile shark in the catch suggests that sustainable yields are low.
