Abstract
A major challenge for the Western Australian community is to ensure the sustainability of these resources in the face of growing pressure, and to ensure that the industries based on these resources are able to develop in a controlled and sustainable fashion which will optimise long-term benefits to the community. Several recreational fisheries, including marron and Shark Bay inner gulf snapper, have shown definitive signs of over-exploitation due to recreational fishing, and there is little doubt that this trend will continue in many near-shore fisheries as the human population increases, unless a new and innovative approach to management is adopted and supported by the recreational fishing community
