Abstract

Disease is a departure from the normal state of health of a fish or any other animal. Diseases have no doubt occurred among fishes since these animals have occupied a place on the earth. Scientific efforts to understand the causes of disease in fishes, and to attempt to control them however, have only been made during the last sixty years.

Fishes, crustaceans and molluscs, as with other animals are subject to a wide spectrum of diseases, that can be classified as infectious or non-infectious. The vast majority of disease problems in the intensive farming of aquatic animals can be traced directly or indirectly to poor management practices. Most serious disease outbreaks can be avoided with sound management practices; but if problems do occur, it is important to detect them early and

initiate the proper treatment immediately. A competent fish farmer should be aware of what diseases are likely to occur in the animal they are farming, take notice of any change in the appearance of the animal and learn to diagnose and treat common diseases themselves.

The primary aim of this book is to outline some health basics for fish and shellfish farmers in Western Australia and to provide answers to the health questions most commonly asked of the Fish Health Section. It is not intended to be a scientific publication on fish and shellfish diseases, rather a reference handbook for fish farmers who wish to learn about health management, avoid and minimise the effect of disease and thereby increase the potential of aquaculture in Western Australia.
