Abstract

The Plan to Support Grains Industry Development (‘the Plan’) recognises that Western Australian agricultural industries are integral to the economic wellbeing of regional and rural communities. The Plan promotes a progressive and profitable grains industry through modern best practice services and research to enhance continuous improvement in farming and supply chain practices.

The Plan has been developed to align with the Government of Western Australia’s initiatives, strategies and tactics for ‘making every hectare count’ (see Appendix 1) and with grains industry needs as identified by industry stakeholders during a series of consultation forums. These industry needs will be addressed in part through the department's five priority responses which together deliver the ‘Building Better Futures’ priority response for the grains industry (Table 1). ‘Building Better Futures’ is about innovative strategies to improve the probability that decisions made in government, on farms and throughout the supply chain are the best possible decisions and will create a more profitable, flexible and resilient grains industry for the future.

The department recognises it is not able to conduct all the work required to meet the industry needs. As a result the Plan focuses on areas where the department’s investment is likely to have greatest impact. Industry is invited to identify where they can work with the department to further contribute to meeting industry needs.

The Plan includes five priority responses designed to be rolled out immediately to deliver benefit to the grains industry. The strategies within the Plan will guide the department's interaction with the grains industry.
