Abstract
This report lists all wild, semi-domesticated and fully domesticated accessions in the Australian Lupin Collection to 1991. The Collection is composed of 2,264 accessions (Perth Numbers between 20629 and 27067) introduced to Australia or from naturalized populations and breeding programmes within Australia. Several accessions are selections from variable populations which were identified during field trials in South Perth, Western Australia. This catalogue lists the characteristics and field evaluation data for every accession where available. Plant breeders and crop scientists will find this information useful for the selection of lupin genotypes with desired characteristics.
Section A of this catalogue should be used in conjunction with a previous catalogue (The Australian Lupin Collection. Passport data for wild and semi-domesticated accessions introduced into Australia to 1990. J.C. Oements and W.A. Cowling. Western Australian Department of Agriculture Research Report 1/90, October 1990) to obtain passport and collection site data for wild and semi-domesticated accessions introduced to Australia. Passport data for fully domesticated accessions (cultivars and breeders' lines) and Australian naturalized populations are listed in Section B of this catalogue, and include pedigrees and genotypes where appropriate.
A large portion of the Australian Lupin collection consists of wild types from the Mediterranean region and Northern Africa, and the majority of these (68%) are L. angustifolius, the lupin species of greatest commercial importance in Australia. A wide range of genetic diversity occurs for flowering time, seed size, plant height, growth habit and other important agronomic attributes in this species. Wild forms of 16 other species also exist in the collection (including all confirmed species of the Old World) and these may be useful for the development of alternative lupin species for Australian agriculture. The collection is deficient in lupin species from the New World, however substantial collections of these are already conserved in North and South America and Europe. The collection also contains a wide range of domesticated cultivars and breeding lines representing seven species. These include cultivars and breeding lines from lupin breeding programmes in Western Australia Soviet Union, United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, France and South Africa that have been donated through co-operative exchange. Pedigrees, genotypes, and characteristics are listed for many of the breeders' lines.
