Abstract

This report contains passport (including collection site) data and Commonwealth Plant Introduction (CPI) numbers for all wild and semi-domesticated Lupinus accessions introduced into Australia to 1990 (a total of 1071 accessions with CPI numbers between 10650 and 122692). Scientists or plant breeders with an interest in the characteristics of wild lupins from certain natural environments, such as high soil pH or low rainfall, will find this information invaluable when they select accessions for their experiments. The majority of the accessions were introduced by Western Australian scientists following collecting missions in the Mediterranean region, and the remainder were donated from institutions and individuals in other countries. Of the total number of accessions, 1040 represent 11 Lupinus spp. from 17 countries in the Old World and 8 accessions of three species were introduced from three countries in the New World. A further 23 accessions of Old World species of unknown origin were donated from herbaria or gene banks in Europe. The predominance of L. angustifolius in the collection (63% of accessions) reflects the importance of this species to Australian agriculture. The collection includes representatives of all confinned species in the Old World, some of which are extremely rare (L. princei and L. digitatus), and includes the broadest known collection of rough seeded lupins, which have potential for development as new agricultural crops. The collection is deficient in representatives of Lupinus from the New World, which are conserved in gene banks in North and South America and Europe. Several accessions, which were stored at the CPI Unit, Canberra, have now been transferred to the Australian Lupin Collection to assemble all known introduced lupin accessions at one location. Evaluation data has been obtained for several collections and selections within collections, but is not obtained within this report.
