Abstract

Alternative strategies to control ryegrass in wheat lupin rotations are worth approximately 15 dollars per hectare for each 50% reduction achieved in plant or seed numbers. This figure has been calculated for circumstances similar to those found at Wongan Hills, and it holds in all cases where ryegrass is still under control using standard herbicides.

Farmers should adopt any ryegrass strategy in addition to that normally practised, so long as the cost to control ratio is less than $15/ha/50% kill. This applies even where good control is being achieved using grass selective herbicides, regardless of the number of previous applications of these herbicides, and regardless of the level of alternative control which is already being applied.

The types of alternative control considered in this analysis are anything additional to normal practice in a wheat lupin rotation. This includes such possibilities as seed harvesting, burning, high crop seeding rates, early tickle cultivation, and delaying of seeding for more complete control by tillage. But in making a decision regarding any of these practices care must be taken to account for the entire cost of the practice as well as its effectiveness.
