Abstract

Lupin seed is used extensively in the dairy industry during summer-autumn as a protein and/or energy supplement. Because of the premium paid for manufacturing milk during this period, up to 1O kg lupins/head/day are fed to cattle given hay or silage-based diets during early lactation.

Many dairy producers have been interested in buying lupins which contain Phomopsis -intected seed because of the discounted prices. Cattle are less susceptible to clinical lupinosis than sheep, but we did not know whether an intake of low levels of phomopsins (the toxins produced by the fungus) would affect milk production.
