Abstract
The dairy industry suffers serious economic loss because the productive life of most dairy cows is much shorter than it should be. In Western Australia it would be difficult to find a commercial herd in which the average cow has more than four lactations. This is consistent with the experience in most dairying countries where it is accepted that the shed life ranges between three and four lactations. With good quality stock the milk yield generally shows a steady increase up to the sixth lactation. This means that the majority of dairy cows never reach the peak of their productive potential.
