Abstract

This report summarises horticultural research, development and extension activities undertaken by staff from the Kununurra District Office during the period 1993 to 1998 and reported annually at the Frank Wise Institute Horticultural Research Review. The range and extent of activities presented and supported by Agriculture Western Australia with industry collaboration indicates the importance of horticulture in the economies of the Kimberley Region and Western Australia. Further support by funding bodies and agribusiness, and collaboration with other research organizations is also acknowledged. Since the early 1980's, horticultural output and value of production from the Ord River Irrigation Area (ORIA) have risen steadily to reach a value of over $33 million in 1997. Total value of agricultural production for the area exceeded $63 million in that year. In addition, an expanding horticulture industry established in the Broome area produces about $3 million of product annually.

Issues influencing established industries have been examined and new opportunities explored. This has occurred through a period of major restructuring within Agriculture Western Australia with increased emphasis on collaboration with industry and recognition of market requirements. This is reflected in the formation of agency partnership groups and locally in the development of the Tropical Agriculture Team, industry groups providing advice on industry requirements in research and development.

This report covers projects, trials and activities involving data collection and reporting of outcomes of importance to the horticultural industry throughout the Kimberley. Many additional activities now underway and yet to be completed will be presented in future reports. Other activities more broadly supporting horticulture and other irrigated agriculture are also undertaken and reported elsewhere. These include land and water management planning and support for Ord Stage 2 development. Information provided in the report will be of assistance to new and existing growers in further development of horticulture in the region.
