Abstract
The Wool Strategy Group, which I initiated in 1993, works with Agriculture Western Australia's Wool Program to set the strategic directions for its activities. Chaired by Mr Philip Gardiner, it has members whose experience include fashion, marketing, financial markets, wool production, selling, as well as strong industry linkages. This document outlines the activities that the Group and the Program have been undertaking over the past 12 months.
The Chairman of the IWTO has recently suggested that Australian production in the coming years will be insufficient or not of the right specifications to supply market demands.
In order to assist Western Australian wool producers to meet this challenge, the Wool Program and the Wool Strategy Group are pursuing two key strategies.
Firstly, developing better relationships with our customers is a high priority, and this means a focus on Europe, as well as on newer partners such as India. These activities are aimed at stimulating the demand for Western Australian wool.
Improving productivity on farm through better adoption of technology is the second strategy. Combined, they are designed to assist Western Australian wool producers in recognising market signals and determining the best management structure, regime and wool specifications to meet market demands.
Our industry is now well placed to take advantage of the welcome upswing in prices and we should be able to make the most of this period by working with traditional and new markets to ensure delivery of wool that is required by the pr0r< >«inn industry, and ultimately the retail consumer.
